Hollywood Burbank Airport Terminal Design Recalls Popular Southern California Modernist Styles

Construction started in late January on a $1.2 billion terminal at Hollywood Burbank Airport in Los Angeles, designed by the architecture firm Corgan, the latest in a surge of airport expansion projects.

Hollywood Burbank, formerly known as Bob Hope Airport, is developing a 355,000-square-foot terminal that’s larger than the 1930s-era terminal it’s replacing. The new terminal will be located farther from the runway to meet safety standards and will be constructed to withstand earthquakes. Work is estimated for completion in October 2026.

Airports are racing to add new terminals and upgrade existing facilities amid a post-pandemic rise in travel. Boston’s Logan International Airport and New York’s LaGuardia Airport and others have recently completed major upgrades.

Corgan’s design for Hollywood Burbank includes a main arrival area that hearkens to the California modernist architectural style, reflected in the works of Richard Neutra, Rudolf Schindler and others.

The new terminal will feature expanded dining and shopping, more restrooms and wider concourses, according to the airport. Hollywood Burbank Airport is owned and operated by the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority.

Enhancing “the operation and safety of the regional airport while creating an iconic statement of arrival, elevating the passenger experience,” Dallas-based Corgan said in a statement.

In the Los Angeles area, architecture firm HOK created an innovative design for the 11-gate Long Beach Airport. Security processing for passengers, boarding gates and baggage claim are partially outdoors, intended to take advantage of Southern California’s weather. HOK is also restoring the airport’s historic 1941 terminal.
